Why SSD-backed VPS matters for your app

Why SSD-backed VPS hosting matters for your app. How storage type affects latency, throughput, and cost—NVMe vs SATA SSD explained.

4 min read

Not all "VPS" storage is the same. The type of disk behind your instance affects latency, throughput, and how your app behaves under load.

HDD vs SSD

HDDs are cheaper per GB but have higher latency and lower random I/O performance. They're fine for backups or bulk storage, but for databases, caches, and app disks, SSDs are the right choice. Random read/write operations can be orders of magnitude faster on SSD.

What we use

All OneRaap VPS instances use NVMe or high-performance SSD for root and data volumes. That means consistent low-latency disk access and better IOPS for databases and log-heavy apps.

What to look for

When comparing providers, check whether "SSD" means a small SSD cache in front of HDD or a full SSD/NVMe backend. At OneRaap, it's the latter.
