Hosting a Minecraft server: Resource requirements and optimization

Minecraft server hosting guide: RAM, CPU, and disk requirements for Java and Bedrock. How to size and optimize your game server.

5 min read

Minecraft server needs depend on version, mods, and player count. Here’s a practical baseline.

Java Edition

Plan for at least 2 GB RAM for a small vanilla server; 4–8 GB for modded or 20+ players. CPU matters for tick performance—single-thread speed helps. Use Aikar’s JVM flags for better GC. SSD or NVMe reduces world save lag.

Bedrock

Bedrock is lighter. A few GB RAM and a couple of CPU cores can run a decent-sized server. Still use SSD for world and logs.
