Game server location and latency: why it matters

Game server location guide: why hosting in Tucson, Arizona affects ping and player experience for NA players. Low latency tips.

5 min read

Low latency isn't just a nice-to-have for game servers—it's often the difference between a playable experience and unplayable lag. Where your server lives matters.

Closer is usually better

Ping is roughly proportional to distance (and the number of hops) between players and the server. Hosting in a region close to your player base keeps latency down. For competitive or real-time games, aim for under 50 ms when possible.

Choosing a region

If your community is mostly in North America, use a NA datacenter. EU players? Pick EU. Splitting regions (e.g. NA and EU servers) is common for larger communities so everyone gets a fair connection.
