Game server DDoS protection: What actually works
Game server DDoS protection: effective mitigation strategies including filtering, rate limits, and scrubbing networks.
Game servers are popular DDoS targets. Mitigation has to be good enough to keep the game playable without breaking the game protocol.
Edge filtering
Drop obviously bad traffic (invalid packets, spoofed sources) at the edge. Rate limit connection attempts and small packets so floods don’t reach your server. Many attacks are volumetric; filtering and rate limiting reduce the load that hits your box.
When to use a scrubbing network
For large or sustained attacks, traffic can be sent through a scrubbing provider that filters attack traffic and forwards clean traffic to you. That adds some latency but can save you during big attacks. We can point you at options that work with our network.
Oneraap uses layered filtering and works with DDoS mitigation where it makes sense. For game servers we tune so legitimate traffic isn’t blocked while junk is dropped early.
